It’s been a long day on the teacher front of my life…actually a long few months and past few days. The kids are picking up on the tension and I can’t stand it. This is going to be a pretty short post because I’m tired from all of this crap.
Long story short, Ontario government isn’t allowing teachers to negotiate contracts. They are imposing contracts on us. For most of us, it’s not about the money or the loss of benefits (those suck, but at this point, whatever). This is more about the unilateral control that a group of people who have never been in a classroom will have over the profession – staff and students. It’s really a rather scary prospect.
Legal challenges have been made against the government because of the fact that this goes against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Human Rights Code – we’re not talking small stuff here! But that’s a long process.
Strike action is in hopes that the Premier and Education Minister will wake up and repeal/fix, the HUGE mess they have made.
We will start rotating strike action – this is not a secret, my local union president spoke about it on the news and my school board sent parents a memo today. I don’t want to strike, but I also don’t want to feel like my job is being dictated. It’s really just pretty crappy no matter how you look at it!
